United Way of Central Washington is here! April-1-2009

On April 1, 2009, two organizations with long histories of serving their respective communities will become one entity.  United Way of Kittitas County and United Way of Yakima County will officially be known as United Way of Central Washington.  There will be one Board, one administration, one campaign and one community investment process.

“This is a very positive step for both our valleys,” said Scott Wagner, Chair of the Consolidation Committee.  “Contributors, agencies and clients will all benefit from a more efficient and effective model.  By merging, we can take advantage of the economies of scale.”

Although both organizations have been in existence for over 50 years, changes in reporting standards and a downturn in the economy have dictated the move.  United Way of Yakima County, headed by John Rothenbueler, raised just over $2,000,000 in its most recent campaign and United Way of Kittitas County, led by Jennifer Rhoden, is expecting to surpass $80,000.

“We welcome the stability of a larger organization,” stated Jerry Pettit, Chair of the United Way of Kittitas County Board.  “Our mission is to provide important services to the people of Kittitas County and this undertaking will do that more effectively.  It’s a win-win for our communities”.

The new organization will have at least one seat on its Board for a Kittitas County representative.  In addition, a 12 to 15 member Kittitas County Advisory Committee is being formed.  They will be responsible for recommending Board representation, campaign leadership and funding opportunities. Staffing and administration would be housed at the current United Way of Yakima County office in Yakima.

United Way of Central Washington will provide funding to over 50 organizations in the two counties. In addition, they expect to continue their involvement in several initiatives, including 2-1-1, early learning and emergency food and shelter programs.
